Such a GOOD movie - Three on a Match (1932) Discussion

Just got to watch it for the first time. On the big screen no less. Was the first movie we watched this semester in my women's films of the 30's and 40's. Was pretty good and thats coming from a guy in his early 20's.

We have seen "Forbidden", "Marked Woman", "The Sin of Madelon Claudet", "Trouble in Paradise", "Baby Face", "Hold Your Man", and "Stella Dallas". We watch "Golddiggers" next week.

Any of Preston Sturges' films? He wrote and directed Stanwyck, Colbert, Lake , Hutton and Darnell but many people don't know his name.

I really like this movie. I had wanted to see it for ages and I wasn't dissapointed. I too expected Bette's part to be larger. Joan Blondell was great as always.

I just saw it on TCM this morning, it was better than I expected. Bette Davis looks so young & cute!

So did I and I was really surprised that Bette Davis didn't have a biggger part, but I really like Joan Blondell. I was picking my brain at the beginning trying to figure out who was playing the young bratty Vivian, and then I realized it was Anne Shirley (I guess the dark hair threw me). I think for one of her earlier roles she did a great job too because she's very likable in most of her roles. Anyway i think it was a very good movie;)

IMDB credits her for playing the part of young Vivian, but on the openning credits it's an actress called Dawn O'Day.

Just rewatched this movie. It's just as good - if not better - the second time around! This is still one of my favourite movies of all time.

I get the feeling you're violating somebody's basic human rights here...

Ann Shirley made several movies as Dawn O'Day. Sometime after the age of 16 she switched to Ann Shirley (she had played the role Ann Shirley in an earlier movie). Totally forgot it was her until I watched this again. Great movie by the way. Always love Bogie and the nose wipe. Ah, pre-code films.

Anne Shirley was born Dawn Eveleen Paris in NY on the 17th April 1919. By 1922/1923 her mother had re-named her Dawn O'Day. She became Anne Shirley in August 1934 due to her role as Anne Shirley in RKOs "Anne of Green Gables", her breakthrough film role. Her 3rd and last marriage was to the screenwriter Charles Lederer - they married in NY in October 1949. He passed away in March 1976. By the end of Anne's life, on the 4th July 1993, she only wanted to be called Anne Lederer, not Anne Shirley. In a magazine from January 1984 she said that she had forgotten her film career, it was so long ago.

Saw this film on TCM last night and I loved it. Though I was surprised that Bette Davis was in it (I wasn't aware of that factoid- not familiar with all of Davis's roles).

Pre-Code films are awesome:)

Bette's role was so small it seemed like she was edited out. It's amazing how big a star Joan Blondell was during this period of cinema. Bette Davis would eclipse all of them in four short years.

I love this movie.I recently saw it on TCM as well. It's amazing how a movie made in this era can still be so shocking. It actually disturbed me a bit. I am looking forward to seeing "Baby Face" next.

I thought the movie was too short and abrupt. It was the length of a modern tv show not a movie.

They needed to flesh our Bette Davis' role . .she is just a card=board figure in it, and maybe add to the Jewish kids adult role. . could have been fun as he was quite comedic.

I agree. It's a brilliant film. I just saw it this morning. All of the performances were wonderful, the film is well made and it captures the era beautifully. I second the OP: Thank God for TCM. Where would we be without it???

Definitely! To be honest I didn't have the greatest expectations to this, but it took me by storm. Great performances from the leads, racy speed(though never destroying the content), cool that they put up newspaper clippings to show what was happening in the world and really put us into the age, pretty shocking, explosive and dark content, and a wonderful and scary bit-part from Bogie. And damn, what an ending.

I just saw this movie on DVD, and really liked it. Wow the wild girl played by Bette Davis came out the winner in the end. I was shocked the mother killed herself to save her little boy. She realized too late she threw away gold for trash! Pretty racy stuff for the times!

Yes, I enjoyed the movie too....Ann Dvorak did a great job in this movie...especially her very last scene when her character killed herself.
