inspiration for game?

There was a game called The 7th Guest released in the 90's and I wonder if this movie was the inspiration for the theme. The titles alone make me thing there's some connection but the game seems to have lifted the general story from this movie and the first puzzle at the dining table closely resembles the first scene of the movie where the woman is remembering the past party.
