the ending

didnt the papers say that, by setting fire to the chemical plant, since the firemen couldnt put out the chemical fires, that the chemical tanks would explode and so poison gas clouds would spread over the whole city, killing everyone? so does everyone end up dying? also, wouldnt the inspector take mabuse in at the end, even if he was crazy or whatever? it would seem that standard police procedure would dictate he do so.

At one point it looked like the firefighters were using chemical foam to stop the fire. I like that the film ends with a Mabuse replacement and the possibilty for it to all start again. No wonder the German goverment wanted this film banned during Hitler's rise.

The firemen do manage to move the chemical cars (although that would probably require a lot of strength, but there was a train that was shown moving slightly later) and appear to use chemical foam. The firemen were also wearing gas masks and flame-retardant suits. I wonder if American firefighters would have used similar equipment at the time.

Is this the first film to end with the camera getting the door shut in it's face? Notorious is the next oldest film I can think of that I have seen with this ending. Then there is the John Wayne western.
