Those fey cowboys at Ruby's Restaurant

Okay, anyone want to take poke (sorry!) at explaining the over-the-top effeminate cowboys at the bar/counter in Ruby's Restaurant, early in the story?

Clearly, the gag was for Calvin to hail some of his fellow Texas cowboys and that they would all turn around and make very girlish gestures, signifying, I presume that they're sissies, homosexuals, or what-you-will and knock the fresh from the ranges cowboy for a loop.

Why were they walking around Broadway in a group?? They must have come from a show, right? Anyone care to speculate which show?? Not "Oklahoma!" by Rodgers and Hammerstein. That wouldn't hit B'way until 1943. Rodgers was still teamed up with Lorenz Hart in 1932 and would still be for the next ten years. "Oklahoma!" would be Rodgers and Hammerstein's first collaboration.

So, then, what show would these boys have been in???

Well, it could have been just a joke based on the stereotype of chorus boys.

But, if it was meant to pinpoint a particular show, I would guess it was Girl Crazy:
