Cagney's Character

Enjoyed the film overall but Matt Nolan had some serious anger-management issues nearly leading him to commit murder. I think modern audiences would not be entirely comfortable with his wife's decision to stick by him.

Excuse me for talking while you're interrupting.

NYC was the 'melting pot and the city was divided up into enclaves from different countries from around the world. Many were first generation from countries where 'crimes of passion' were not uncommon and the law could be very lenient in such cases. Avenging the death of a family member (along with catching your bride in bed with another man etc) was often considered the right thing to do and many were sympathetic although they might not take all the way to the courtroom here in the new country.
