To tell or not to tell - Spoiler Alert

I enjoyed this movie but it drove me crazy that Nina and Ned never told Gordon the truth. I even think Sam deserved to know, perhaps in his old age, but I understand why they'd leave him in the dark. The news may have unnecessarily hurt him but I don't think it would have driven him mad.

Gordon, on the other hand, is a different story. I feel he had every right to know who fathered him. He had everything to gain by knowing. However he may have felt about what they had done, he would soon realize he could never have existed if they hadn't done what they did. Also, knowing his story would, in my opinion, make him a more thoughtful and compassionate person.

I don't think it's ever appropriate to keep certain information from a person. If he had been adopted, for instance, learning who his birth parents were would not take anything away from the parents who raised him but it would reveal more to him about himself than he already knew. In Gordon's case, he'd finally understand the closeness between his mother and Ned. Of course, there was no need to elaborate or tell him the extent of their relationship. They could have told him in a way that stressed what Sam's mother had told Nina. Instead of a betrayal, they allowed Sam's name and family lineage to continue for at least one more generation.

In a situation like that, I don't think they'd hesitate to tell him why he's named Gordon but being named in honor of his mother's lost love, would seem more odd than being fathered by a close friend. It would be different if he was Ned's child simply because his mother had cheated but they supposedly did it for the purpose of giving Sam what he wanted without the potential risks of insanity.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
