Name Changes

I understand they sometimes change names in biopics like this, but I can't figure out the method to the madness. Usually it's when the person is still alive. However Tabor was already dead as were Augusta and Silver dollar. To confuse it even more, Hook and Rische had their real names used as did the two children in the story.

Baby Doe Tabor was still alive and living in Leadville when the picture opened in Colorado. Contrary to some internet accounts which say she refused to see the film (she did not want to make the trip to Denver, where it world-premiered and where she feared she would be recognized), Baby Doe did travel incognito in the company of friends to see the picture when it opened in the small town of Monte Vista, south of Leadville. Reportedly, she did not express strong opinions one way or the other about the picture.

By "Tabor" I meant the subject of the biopic, Horace Tabor. That's what makes it so confusing. His name is changed, as are others and they were deceased. Baby Doe was still alive and her name was used (although not the last name). There really wasn't a rhyme or reason as to who had their real name used and who didn't.

It is possible that the Tabor estate did not want real names/last names to be used, but other persons' estates did not care. So some real names were used, some weren't.
