I agree. I'm watching the film on TCM now and, admittedly, I wasn't paying close attention to the cast and, when the character of Gaffney appeared, I was wondering: "Is that Karloff?" and had to check.

It was great seeing him. At first I didn't recognize him until I looked up the cast on IMDB.com. He was in a lot of horror movies.

He was miscast as a gangster, the only horror star who could do thug well was Lon Chaney Jr.
