Both deserve 10/10, two classics, for various reasons.

If you can appreciate that times were different in 1931, you'd understand that this film was extremely violent for it's time. Banned in some places, believe it or not. Most knowledgeable screen historians think DePalmas "Scarface" was weaker, in fact. I disagree. I think, through the ultraviolence, they compare well.

You're not half as sick feeling as I am about people's horrible taste (lack of film knowledge.)
I rate this an 8-of-10. And the DePalma crud is a 2/10, being generous. I can't believe how many like that garbage.

I'm in total agreement with the OP - give me Paul Muni's electrifying and far more dangerous performance of Scarface over Pacino's ridiculously over-the-top (though fun to watch) performance of Tony Montana.

When I get excited I sound Caucasian. You know, like that guy from 'Hangin with Mr. Cooper'. - Griff, MWC

Montana was supposed to be over the top, he was no Michael Corleone. And please don't tell me that Muni wasn't over the top either, it was and that's why it was so electrifying, Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd., Jack Nicholson in The Shining, have you seen Rashomon? Toshiro Mifune was delightfully over the top? Or There Will be Blood? It was magnificently over the top.

Montana is a man who has an over the top approach to life, he wants everything, the world, money, power, girls, he embodies his own excesses through his attitude, but you're free to tag it as "Pacino just shouting".

And for me, the remarke deserves to be rated higher, why?

First, the acting, say what you want, but it's superior in Scarface, the cop had the charisma of a school teacher, touching his suspenders to appear tough and that 'Dope' guy was an embarrassment.

Secondly, the fact that Cesca forgave Tony for what he did to Rinaldo was totally off character or too quick.

Finally, that damn Code that made Tony crawl like a rat, I understand it was necessary but did we need the mustache cop to tell him "hey, I told you you were gonna end that way", maybe I would have accepted it if it was the fat cop, but the guy with the mustache annoyed the hell out of me.

The original is still a great film but it gets a bit corny at some parts.

The remake is only considered better because it's more accessible to a wider audience. I know people who love this film because it's "cool" to like. Ever hear a teen talk about this film. It's humourous.
