Strange indeed.

I watched this for the first time last night on TCM and was like wtf?

I've seen this before and watched it again last night---it's bizzare, yet charming. Like "The Lady Vanishes", is has an odd, dream-like feel to it; off-kilter gestures and imagery, surprising reactions and characters. It builds this subtle kind of unease that you can't quite put your finger on---like watching "La Voyage dans la Lune"; it's whimsical and romantic...yet, downright weird. Hitchcock didn't really get back to this specific kind of ambience/atmosphere building until "Vertigo". Most of his work after the late 30's early 40's were mystery pieces that didn't necessarily focus on the luminescent, beautiful creepiness of his earlier films.
