Can anyone explain to me the meaning of Una Merkel's referencing 'Red' as Mrs. Winchell? When Red is drunk and telling her that Bill Legendre has made up with his wife? I have looked it up, and the best I got wasthat Mrs. Winchell may have been a news reporter of the day, which would make sense, but the information was unclear

You're pretty close.This is a reference to Walter Winchell who was one of the most famous gossip columnists back in the day.
