I wonder when we started pronouncing it "Sigh'-gon"?

Yes .. it took me several sayings and wondering where the heck 'Saygon' might be to click..
Is this a standard American way of saying it? Or a dated way?

My guess would be it's an ignorant way. Most of us Yanks didn't know Saigon existed until thirty years after this picture was made.

Was it actually set there? I thought Malaya as it was a rubber plantation.
