I Just Don't Know

Perhaps it is just me, but I can't understand this movie. Barbara's character is in love with George Brent's character except I have no idea why. To me it seems the love is very shallow. Is this intended? Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Joan supposed to love Jim because if a decent man loves her that means she's decent? Is she trying to make up for her relationship with Eddie?

I think she sees and appreciates the authenticity of, and the genuine goodness in, Jim, and that those qualities (not to mention he's so handsome!) are what she falls in love with. Also, feeling bad that she shut down his decidedly awkward, abrupt, unpolished wedding night advances, but realizing it isn't his fault that he so totally lacks finesse with women (likewise that he'd had understandable new-husband expectations), and that he'd meant no offensiveness, she is eager to make things right with him, and falls in love with him in the process.

it was awful.i totally agree......and what about about her poor maid ? she pretty much ruined her life, conned the farmer and even eddie for the money.. she should have stayed in the city with her gambler...he was sexier anyway !

I suppose Jim was the "decent" man, but Eddie seemed pretty decent himself. He never treated her badly and they had a lot more in common than Jim and she did. Still, like the other poster said, she probably liked the authenticity of Jim.
