some clever bits in early Stanwyck flick

... in the jewelry store and the wedding scene.

Wellman sure made some great films - Oxbow Incident, The High & The Mighty, Public Enemy. He and Stanwyck would work together on five projects:
- The Great Man's Lady
- Lady of Burlesque
- Night Nurse
- The Purchase Price
- So Big!

This film is easily the weakest of the Stanwyck-Wellan collaborations but it I still found it entertaining thanks to a typically sincere Stanwyck performance and smooth direction by Wellman. NIGHT NURSE seems to be the most acclaimed of their films with the possible exception of LADY OF BURLESQUE; I think SO BIG and THE GREAT MAN'S LADY are two of the most underrated gems of Stanwyck's career, neither of them made much of an impression on audiences or critics but she is close to her very best in them.

How about the suggestive conversation on the train?
