Protests in general are indicated by the enactment of the Hays code. Many films of that era dealt with nudity, unmarried or extra-marital sex, children born out of wedlock, gangsters, drink, drugs,...you name it and someone filmed it. If we had ALL the early films we'd have a fuller view of the past, and one that might conflict with modern ideas that progress comes in a straight line with more conservative attitudes the farther back we go. One has to wonder what would have happened if Hays had never been born. Might be a good plot for another film--time travel to eliminate Hays from history. (Of course I don't advocate murder, and in truth, someone else would have come along to be censor in chief, as there was in Britain, too, because filmmakers were pushing the envelope until it broke.)
