Absolutely Hilarious!

But like I've posted in other forums... The copy I got was outta the 50 Horror Classics box set. This film looks like it had been under the sea for years before someone saved it. But damn funny!!! The only think missing in this film was Scooby-Doo!

Trust me,

It was funny but unintentionally so. When Exodus came downstairs and saw Yogi I was like "they are going to make a super-racist joke about African-Americans and apes aren't they?"......and they made a super-racist joke about African-Americans and apes. I saw this in the 50 Horror Classics as well (which is well worth the $15 or so for all of the campy movies it has). The quality of the film was bad, but it was made in 1932 (I felt blessed that there was sound). I wouldn't recommend watching this movie unless you really enjoy campy old horror films, and would remind viewers to keep in mind that you are more likely to laugh at how terrible the film is than to actually be frightened or thrilled. Still, if you like goofy old horror films it was full of laughs.

Hehe. I agree. I was thinking the same thing, I can't believe they "went there" when the black man described his granddaddy as looking like an ape. "but not as active". Just wrong. But I suppose that was "normal" back in the day. Anyway overall the movie is not good but its not completely horrible. It had a nice atmosphere to it and some nice lighting. But the pacing and the story were pretty lame. 4/10

Best was the best part of the film. I felt annoyed with that racist line, but you have to take account of the time. The movie was boring..I agree the pacing was a drag. I hardly noticed the heroine. I was hoping to see some of the old secret passages..I love those. I gave it a 3/10.

One of the worst I have missed. Too bad! I'll have to sell my house so I can afford to buy this.

To understand is the opposite of existing.

I have the same boxed set of 50 Horror Classics. Watch them every year at this time and just saw The Monster Walks the other night.

Putting aside the racist angle for a moment - and it's definitely there - I have to mention the strange fact that apes were portrayed as monsters back then. In the days before National Geographic I guess, people weren't as aware of the dignified creatures that they are.

"Write us out of this one, Joan Wilder..."

Just watched this from the 50 horror classics set too. I liked the atmosphere. As somebody already mentioned, they (the producers) really should have made a set for the hidden passage ways. It would have added some demension to the movie and made it more entertaining. And it wouldn't have cost very much for something like that.

Still, its good for those of us that like these old low budget flicks, and that 50 classics set is SUCH a bargain!

I really enjoyed the film to be quite honest with you, so far I've watched 48 out of the 100 in the box, and this is one of the funniest,, it wasn't really meant to be scary as far as I can tell.
are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

I really don't think the makers of this film intended it to be scary, more funny than anything else,, I actually enjoyed it, you have to remember that this was made a long time ago, and the time period was way different than it is today.
