Very Sweet

If there is a more tender portrayal of alcoholism
and the tragedies it can cause, I've never seen it.
The wistful humor blends seamlessly with the sorrow and pain.
The motivations and longings of every character, major or
secondary, is portrayed with sympathy and pity.

A vEry young Sylvia Sidney does a fine job as the neglected wife,
and I've never appreciated Frederick March, before now.
I knew he was capable, but in this film he is lovable.

This was a wonderful surprise. It is a charmingly effective
morality play -- and directed by one of the few ladies in that
profession, Dorothy Arzner.
