Robber Offering The Lady a Joit?

The way the robber describes the smoke to the lady, and it's effects, sure seem like it was some POT. Also the door man the robber gives a smoke too sure seems happy to have it :)

All the characteristics of the 'smokes' seem to be directed at the effects of marijuana. Laughing, sleepiness, hunger, all the right stuff, so I'm sure that's what was implied.

One of the reasons "Jewel Robbery" is an awesome pre-Code.

So much for the more innocent days of the past.... :) One has to remember that the Roaring Twenties really roared, and it didn't stop with the Great Depression. That generation then had to pretend to their descendants they were lily pure and didn't do anything wilder than going to a church ice cream social. Luckily for them, a lot of the evidence was destroyed. :)

Airing on TCM right now, and during Robert Ozbourne's description, he mentions the jewel thief using Marijuana smoke to distract his victims.

Watching it now -- my, my -- these kids today!

They sure are stoned.

Just saw a film on TV called "Night of Terror" (1933). Bela Lugosi distracts a cop by offering him a cigarette. The cop smells it and asks what kind of cigarette it is. Lugosi tells him it's an "oriental" cigarette. Within minutes, the cop is too stoned to move. Gotta love that they used to do this sort of thing.
