He did pretty well for a former chain gang prisoner! I think in reality he would have worked a menial job barely able to feed and clothe himself

He was definitely a pimp. Probably a speakeasy with "extra services available."

As to his "quick ascent," wasn't there some time elapsed between his release and Allen's escape? I haven't seen the movie in a while but I thought his release came fairly early in Allen's incarceration, when Bomber gives him the "hang it on a limb" talk? There may have been a few years between then and Allen's escape.
