According to the movie information the street scenes were shot at the backlots of the movies studios in Hooywood and the Other scenes were shot in San Bernadino National Forest and Lake Arrowhead.

IMDB does list the location shots for the lake (and the interior studio shots). But Paramount only had city street structures on their backlot. So I wonder about the residential street where Ruth's house was. I wish I new LA better and could recognize it. Where's James Ellroy when you need him?

They could have used the RKO Encino Ranch, which had a variety of outside settings that were used and adapted for a huge number of films.
