Roberta would have to have been born no later than 1914 in order for her to reach the age of 18 in the film's narrative. But FORBIDDEN is set in the contemporary era from start to finish.
On the other hand, Columbia Pictures was a "Poverty Row" studio and probably couldn't afford the luxury of period costumes & props for chronological accuracy's sake.

The props were ok for the times and the movie is greatly underrated. The characters age but the props don't progress.
