charles lawrence 'larry' woodall

my stepgrandfather Larry Woodall was a catcher who appeared in Joe E. Brown's baseball comedies, but I find no credit for him. I have no memory of Larry who died in 1962.
He was Cobb's secondstring catcher and played for Detroit for ten years. In later years he was the bullpen manager and a scout for Boston Red Sox. in 1949 he was sent to Birminghan to scout Willie Mays. It depends on who's telling the story, but he didn't get to see Mays play and went back to tell the front officer he didn't think Mays was Red Sox material.
Jonathan Yardley's review of a book on the Sox' owner and his racial policies
discussed this story a few years ago in THE WASHINGTON POST without nmaing Larry.
Did Larry regret that mistake? I don't know.
