NOT the FIRST

The first star to appear nude on screen was Annette Kellerman in her seventh film "Daughter of the Gods" during the silent era. The 3 hour Fox Film featured the swimmer fully nude and she still wasn't the first actress to appear nude either there were many silent films made with nude scenes due to the fact there was little censorship then.

"Kid, don't threaten me. There are worse things than death, and I can do all of them."

It doesn't claim to be the first film with nudity, the claim is for the first non-pornographic film with a sex scene.

Hmm, Sprydle, I know this is an old post, but I believe YES there were a lot of silent films with nudity, but these scenes were censored out before they made it to theaters. Little censorship in the 30's? Lol!
This one too was edited for US audiences (unfortunately for them).
It's nice that we can have the uncensored versions on DVD now!

TMC just showed this movie last week. Ii wonder if it was the uncensored version? Did anyone see it that has the uncensored DVD?

It didn't look censored to me...it was a really good movie. The lack of talking was really refreshing.

reply

I saw most of it on TCM the other day, but I missed the nude parts. I don't believe it was censored though, since they never censor anything on that channel (which is nice).

The dvd that Amazon sells is censored by some editor who doesn't like the nude scenes. :(

reply

How dumb. I watched the (uncensored) naked scenes on youtube and they were BARELY THERE. How could someone edit them out when there are so many movies out with way more gratuitous nude scenes and nobody seems to mind? Just doesn't make sense to me.
Besides, the movie should be shown in it's original sense.

reply

There was relatively little censorship before the Hayes Code was instituted in 1934.

Kellerman wasn't the first either. First was Audrey Munson in the film "Inspiration" from 1915.
