last line
What was the last line Karl said to the Baroness? What did it mean?
shareI suppose you mean the actual last line of the movie. If so he says, 'Madame's new chauffeur, I hope.' I don't know if what this woman's title is but it's clear he's moved on to a new residence and is meeting his next employer/victim.
He's not yet hired but it's clear she's already fallen for his charms and will hire him. This one, like the Countess he meets at the wedding, will likely be his lover. We learn early in the movie that Karl had been her chauffeur and lover and had at some point been blackmailing her. He had even dictated his own excellent letter of reference that he got her to write and sign.
Obviously, his Modus Operandi is to sleep with the lady of the house but in the Baroness' case that didn't work out. He thought it was going in that direction but she already had a lover so he used that angle instead.
Things didn't work out so well for Karl at the Baroness' house where he probably stood to have his biggest success. Besides blackmailing the Baroness, he targeted the cook and had already gotten her money. He might have gotten away with all of it if not for his genuine interest in Anna. She was his downfall. It wasn't enough to sleep with her he wanted her to run away with him.
He stopped sleeping with the cook, that made her angry; and he gave the Baroness' jewelry to Anna. Defending her made the Baroness aware of his feelings for her. The Baroness used it to get Albert involved and to go after Karl.
Though he almost lost his life, did Karl learn his lesson? Of course not! The only thing he's learned is to probably keep it simple next time and not to let his feelings get in the way of his 'work.'
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
Great observation. At first I thought he was going to kill Anna in the wine celler. That was a pretty rough tussle.
