Why not hard boiled eggs and nuts?

What was wrong with Laurel bringing Hardy hardboiled eggs and nuts while convalescing in the hospital?

I've always wondered, but have guessed its because he can't eat them or something like that. A broken leg needs protein!

Well, the nuts did give Stan a reason to lift up the weight used to help set Ollie's broken leg.

I always thought it was because eating them results in lots of messy little pieces of shells. Not the kind of thing you'd want in your bed!
