Pansies

the appearance of 2 mincing waiters in the Village shocked the audience I was in when we saw this a week ago. But the characters were au courant at the time the movie was made. I don't recall if Vito Russo referred to the scene in THE CELLULOID CLOSET, but there's an entire chapter about "The Pansy Craze" in GAY NEW YORK by George Chauncy. "Pansy acts" were a big deal in night clubs and elsewhere across the US in the 1930's, a close parallel to the blackface acts just a few years before.

people get too " up in arms" OVER THIS STUFF..
I think it's funny, laugh it off!

im searching for my copy of CALL HER SAVAGE right now.

I just read CLARA BOW, RUNNIN' WILD, By David Stenn.
a second time, very good book.

Clara had a interesting, but difficult life all around!

I don't blame her for being a recluse!

I do it most of the time myself.eeeeeeek! what a world we live in.

Vito Russo does refer to the gay bar scene in "The Celluloid Closet"; that's where I first heard about CALL HER SAVAGE.

Seeing the waiters prancing about in their frilly outfits and singing about sailors...pretty wild stuff.

Everyone has their reasons.

it was something like "the singing chambermaids". fun.

Randall says "lets go down to the village. there are some pretty rough places down there."

after the fight, Nasa says "Now take me to one of those ROUGH places". and they both laugh.

also check out Wonder Bar (1934). another fun scene.

There's also a scene at the end of Betty Boop's Penthouse, which I just now understand.
