Flintstones episode inspired by Boudu?

"Boudu sauvé des eaux" may have inspired an episode of the 1960's Flintstones television show. The episode from season 2 of the series, entitled "This is Your Lifesaver", has a plot which seems loosely based on it. Fred and Barney encounter a man on a bridge who is about to drown himself in a river. Fred rescues the man and then allows him to stay in his house, feeling responsible for him after saving his life. The man creates havoc in the Flintstone household, in a fashion similar to Boudu. The main differences are that in the Flintstones episode, the man is not a tramp, but a confidence man, and the way in which the narratives are ultimately resolved differ considerably.

I think I recall seeing that episode when I was younger, but now you're making me want to go out an buy a Flinstones DVD collection not just to compare the episode with the film, but because I miss that show so much. The influence of this picture has been greatly underestimated, a film that Francois Truffaut borrowed from greatly, and it's been ripped off in American movies immeasurably since Down and Out in Beverly Hills brought some long overdue attention its way, and certainly even prior to that. I'm shocked to see how few votes it has, even after a Criterion release.

Cinema is an old whore who knows how to give many kinds of pleasure.
