Relationships In The Film

Curiously,in this pre code film when the characters played by Davies and Dove finish talking about their conflict with each other over character played by Bob Montgomery, they lay in bed with each other as the scene closes. Towards the close of the film when stateing to Davies and Dove that he is not in love with either of them he says something to the affect that "Gay life isn't as big as it seems".Is he downplaying that he is "gay" by today'a standards or refering to encounters between men and women as can also be interpreted?

gay

adjective

1 a : happily excited : merry <in a gay mood>
b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits <a bird's gay spring song>
2
a : bright, lively <gay sunny meadows>
b : brilliant in color
3
: given to social pleasures; also : licentious

That's how it was meant in 1932.

Modern definition:

4 a : homosexual <gay men>
b : of, relating to, or used by homosexuals <the gay rights movement> <a gay bar>

It would really be stretching a point to think that his wording had anything to do with homosexuality. "Gay" was meant to mean the high life of partying he had been throwing himself into.
