Uneven with a groan-worthy finale

This is the first complete Marion Davies film I've watched, and I must say she was marvelously photogenic and at times gifted as an actress/comedienne. I especially liked her quiet moments when she showed some real sensitivity as an actress. But overall, I found the film was hurt by what I felt was the basic unlikeable nature of the two leading female characters. Blondie was too often an insensitive airhead and Lottie (Lurlene) was too often mean and nasty, not to mention pretentious. It shows people could be just as amoral and acquisitive as nowadays. Also, any good feelings about the film are pretty much destroyed by an awfully sappy finale, with Davies laughing cloyingly through her tears and hobbling about injured, only to have a silly and unbelievable happy ending. I really want to see more of Marion Davies, but she was let down by her script and direction here.
