One of those movies....Love it HATE the ending

I loved this movie. It was clever and funny and dramatic but I am such a sucker for a happy ending. I hated the ending. Mae Clarke is sooo good in this movie. Even Bette Davis is a likable character! Then the end comes, I wanted a happy ending! I still love the movie.

I hated she died too.

While I like a happy ending, too, this added to the overall grittiness and realism of the film. Kudos to Whale for this ending.

It sure made me cry!

Yeah, I hated it. There was no reason for Myra to die, it was just a random shock ending.

It's one thing if she hadn't agreed to marry Roy. At least then you could spin it that the moral of the tale is that her lack of courage to come clean to Roy or the lack of confidence in herself to believe that she was worthy of him led to her downfall. But no, her life as a prostitute was revealed, Roy didn't care, and they were ready to live happily ever after. But then boom, it took 30 seconds of screen time to ruin everything.

In the original play, it's more of a suicide and, from what I've read, more open-ended (she may or may not die). In this, it was just random. I sat there laughing for about 10 seconds after it happened it was so silly.

Maybe the director didn't want to do a sequel so this was the only way he could get out of it.
