Added poignancy

This lovely early Ozu film was given added poignancy to me by learning that its lead actor, Tokihiko Okada, who is wonderful in it, died only three years later from tuberculosis. He is by turns soulful and comic and showed great promise in this film in his everyman rold - what a sad loss.

Wow, that's a shame. I didn't know about that. You're right, it does add poignancy to it. He was a good actor, shame he didn't live longer. Though, looking at his imdb page now, I see that his daughter, who was born shortly before he died, turned out to be an actress. Turns out i've actually seen some of her stuff and she's pretty good. So it's almost like she continued where he left off.
