New york in summer?

I am a Californian and where I live summer's can reach 112 sometimes.
HOT HOT HOT. we've begun to get humid at night (for us) we are so close to the foot hills and all.

is NYC Really that hot and humid in summer? or were they experiencing a heat wave?

I read about tenement life in NYC in the old days and people slept on their fire escapes, roof tops and the sidewalks!
so this seems like a real slice of life in those days.

I can't imagine having No A/C! even here.

I have watched this three times today on DVD, I bought a great quality copy off ebay a few days ago.
I think this is one of, if not my favorite movies of the beginning of the 30's

Sylvia Sidney was such a beautiful girl as a young woman ( and good actress)
and Estelle Taylor was very lovely and gave a great performance in this.

Mrs Jones was a mean nasty old thing! haha showing what a terrific and talented actress Miss Bondi was.
