M. Astor steals the show

fun flick. good acting and good script.. but...who-ever edited this didn't remove the annoying clicks in-between MOST of the camera-shot changes in the version shown on TCM in May 2010. E.E. Horton looks a lot younger than 45 in this one..

I agree this is a really good little movie. I very much enjoyed it. Very well-done, and "modern" for its time, too. Mary Astor always gave excellent performances, not to mention sure did exude class. By the way, the guy who played her husband didn't quite seem on a par with the rest of the cast to me. Interesting premise that this movie has. I didn't at all notice the clicks that you mentioned.

Yes, she did a great job and was utterly engaging. I watched Red Dust today, in which she was not compelling (though she did a fine job), then followed it with a viewing of Smart Woman, in which I was glad to see Mary looked great and worked so intelligently to get her man back (though she was too good for him, IMO).

True; he had no idea what a trashy woman that girlfriend of his was, or how easily he could be played! And to cheat on his wife while she left town to take care of her seriously ill other is lower, in my opinion, that just cheating.

The clicks you and I heard were the places where the film was pieced together by the editor, and in the early days of sound-on-film it was very common to hear the clicks or thumps on the film's soundtrack because they had not yet perfected the seemless editing of sound at the film edit points. I usually hear the thumps, which can be even more detectable if you have speakers with low bass sound.

Yes, I was annoyed by the "thumps" on the soundtrack when the shots changed, but seemed to notice them less and less as the film went on. I've seen other early talkies with that problem, too. Guess they didn't have the sound editing technology down just right back then.
