In the beginning of the film, a girl asks to borrow $100 from Nick. He asks what for and she whispers into his ear. Wonder what it was for?

Could it be an abortion? At least that's what I thought. Then again, it could be for her pimp. Who knows?

That's what I figured and Nick was the father. That's why he gave the $100 so easily.

The girl was only a stooge for Boris Karloff,who figured on using Nick's own money to get into the game.Recognizing the taped bill as his own,an angry Nick demands that Karloff bet the entire C-note,and Boris winds up both dejected and ejected,never to be seen after the opening reel.

Exactly, but I think they are speculating on the lie she told him to get the dough, not the real reason
