I feel stupid, but the film quality was so poor I think I must have missed something. What is the significance of the tree being cut down at the end of the movie?

Did Hornblower get the property back, or were the Hillcrests clearing the property?

It's a symbol. That just means destruction is taken place anyway, as it did!
