This movie is a mess

I loved watching these soon to be famous actors early in their careers but this movie looks like a jumbled mish-mash. According to something I read on this site, Irving Thalberg was so impressed with Clark Gable in the early scenes, he expanded his role. My guess is, Gable took over Johnny Mack Brown's role half way through the picture and except for winning the girl at the end, he finished it up for him.
