What a great movie

Santa's first version with Lupita Tovar is definetely one of the best movies Mexico's golden era made.

Actually this movie is "pre-golden era". However its commercial success paved the way for mexican filmmakers and the mexican film industry, hence to "La edad de oro del cine mexicano".
The movie hasn't aged too well, but hey! it was the first all-talkie produced in Latin America! Actually the first feature film shot in Latin America using optical sound recording. There were a number of "sound films" made before 'Santa' but they all used the old Vitaphone system.
So the value of 'Santa' nowadays is based more on its historical relevance. It is a milestone in mexican cinema, and just for that fact it deserves to be appreciated.

I watched it yesterday for the first time in my life, and totally loved it! It was a great movie with a magnificent performance by the gorgeous Lupita Tovar. It's a shame that the movie hasn't been restored properly for the DVD release, since both print and sound quality are very poor. It's watchable, though, if you really want to see it. I have to remark once more how lovely Ms. Tovar is in it. Her performance was truly heartbreaking.
