What was the last thing James Cagney Said??

Before he dies I forget?? It was a great line too. Someone Help me out.

reply

I think it was "I ain't so tough", but I'm not sure

reply

Or was it "I'M ON TOP OF THE WORLD"??

reply

No, no; that was from WHITE HEAT: "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!"

reply

Ooops I got the wrong movie... I'm an ass.

reply

Just to clarify the matter. Tom Powers (Jimmy Cagney) says "I ain't so tough" AFTER the shootout in the building with the "bad" guys. He staggers out of the building into a heavy downpour, staggers along a bit, and then, before falling down into the gutter, he says "I ain't so tough." Great movie, great scene, great actor. What more could you ask for? Nuttin.

reply

His actual last line is when he's in hospital. It's "I'm just sorry."

reply

His last word was rosebud.

reply

ROFL....good one.

"Toppa the world, ma"

I always thought he said, "Now y'aint so tough," after the rainy night shoot-out. Are you guys sure? That seems to make more sense.

The last lines Cagney had in "The Public Enemy" were in the hospital. I'm watching the scene as we speak.

Here is how it goes:

Ma Powers: Tom, do you know me? Tommy boy?
Tom: Sure Ma.
Ma: Mike's here, he's come to see you.
Tom: Hi Mike.
Mike: How are you Tom, old scuff?
Tom: I've been wanting to see you.
Mike: You're going to be seeing a lot of me, Tom.
Tom: There's something I wanted to say to you, Mike. I'm sorry.
Mike: Sorry? For what?
Tom: I'm just sorry. You know.
Ma: You and Mike are going to be friends again?
Tom: Sure. Friends.
Ma: I'm so happy.
Tom: Ma, you must like Mika a lot better than me.
Ma: No, no, Tommy boy. You're my baby.
Tom: Sure. I'm your baby.
Ma: You're coming home, ain't ya Tommy? To stay?
Tom: Sure. Coming home. I mean, if I can ever get out of here.
Mike: You're gonna get out of here all right, Tom.
Ma: Why, of course you are. You're going to get well and strong. Both my boys back. All of us together again. I'm almost glad this happened.

And that's the end of the scene. His official last line? "I mean, if I can ever get out of here." There you have it.

Fiend is right, watched it yesterday..

"I'm the Police Chief, I know everything..."

reply

Thanks for listing the dialogue. When Cagney says, "I ain't so tough" would have been a great ending, but I think the actual ending was one of the all time great endings. It's very disturbing.

reply

yeah,I just got through watching it on TCM and thefiend99 is right.
It sure is a good movie!

it only makes sense if you want his character to have learned nothing his whole life.
he just took out all those guys and got shot up for it, he realized finally that hes not the biggest or baddest.. thats why hes so remorse in the hospital and he finally gets back with his family. he aint so tough anymore.

reply

"I mean, if I can ever get out of here."

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

Yes, csu, that's right. That last scene was really powerful/horrible! We've been seeing the situation through the eyes of his mother and brother, so happy that the gangsters are bringing him home...when the brother opens the door, there is poor Cagney, in his bandages, with his dead, open eyes..what a horrible sight for a mother or brother [a blessing Mom was upstairs]. That really got me.

reply

I was spooked by the package delivered by the gangsters. I thought Tom Powers was kidding until he landed on his face and didn't flinch.

Now THAT's an actor for you.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

reply

It was something about a "Royale with cheese", but they cut it because nobody knew what he was talking about.
