If a new version were made...

...who would you cast?

reply

I have just seen Kim Cattrall and Matthew MacFadyen play the principal roles on stage. In my opinion they would be ideal.

Matthew would be great! I think Kate Winslet would be great as Amanda.

I do have to say, I'm tired of actors who are in their 50's being cast in this play. Coward is very specific that Amanda and Eliot are around 30. These are the mistakes of YOUNG people, not middle aged people. It just isn't believable to me that people in their 50's acting as immature as they do. That would be a different play entirely. :D Kim Cattrall would've been a PERFECT Amanda 20 years ago.

I had the pleasure of seeing Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor do this play on the stage approx. 25 years ago. They were wonderful. They were not 30, but sophisticated actors in appropriate roles. It was very funny. What was so great they did not over act. They low keyed it so you heard the funny dialogue.

Of course they were good in it. They were playing themselves (according to the tabloids at the time).

I got the impression that was just how Amanda and Elyot related to each other. While they were at peace at the end of the movie it probably wouldn't last much longer than the two minutes it usually had before.

By the time the train pulled out of Sollochs they'd be at it again. One of them might remember to say Sollochs; there would be a momentary truce; they'd make up not long after; then they'd go right back to fighting - that was the dynamics of their relationship.

If you fast forward twenty years or so, everything would likely be exactly the same. They'd probably fight over different things and it may be somewhat less physical but they would still be in a fight-reconcile-fight-reconcile cycle. That's what was lacking in their relationships with their new spouses. Amanda and Elyot only seemed to fight with Victor and Sybil over their ex-spouses and only because they hadn't gotten over them. Oddly, Sybil and Victor could, like Amanda and Elyot, fight over any little thing.
