the relationship between the teacher and Manuela

What kind of relationship do you think they had? Do you believe that Manuela was in love with Fraulein von Bernburg or her behaviour was just a result for missing her mother? And what about Fraulein von Bernburg? Did she felt anything more for her or it was just some kind of affection for a "lonely" girl? I have also seen the remake(1958) and I would like to know what others think.
