Is Ruth Wonderly...

...on death row at the end of this version? The final scene doesn't give us much to go by, except that Bebe Daniel's character becomes fairly sympathetic while Ricardo Cortez's Sam Spade just seems self-satisfied, then slightly regretful when she reveals that she really loves him. (I've always liked Cortez's rather sleazy portrayal of the Sam Spade character. By comparison, Bogie comes across as, well...Bogie. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

I doubt she's on death row. California's first execution of a woman wasn't until 1941. Since the movie was made in 1931, I'm thinking contemporary audiences would have assumed she received a long stretch at San Quentin like Spade mentioned.
