OMG - A Double Bed!

In Sam Spade's apartment when he leaves Ruth sleeping we see her sleeping in a Double Bed! All the older films I've ever seen lead me to believe there were no such things. Heck, even long term married couples were shown sleeping in twin beds. And not only that, but when the camera peels away, we see the side next to Ruth showed the other pillow with a head indentention, as well as the indentation of a body on the mattress and rumpled sheets.
Wow, imagine, a movie strongly intimating two people slept together in one bed...and they weren't even married on top of that!

Welcome to pre-Hayes Code Hollywood!

If you want a REAL shocker for the time period, check out "Living for Design" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023940/ ) that one's sure to throw you for a loop!

Although the code enforced it I don't think was strictly because of the code. I've seen plenty of pre-code films with single beds. For exampele, THE DIVORCEE had a married couple of three years who had two single beds. Perhaps people back then geniunely did have single beds more than doubles.

So sezeth I, so sezeth the world.

Old and grey as I am, I can remember single beds promoted for married couples as a way to solve kicking, blanket hogging, and snoring problems. The king-size bed fills the role today.

OMG! (it's not what you think)

It makes sense that a single guy would have a single bed in his apartment. Obviously he liked the extra room of a double over a single for whatever reason.
