Even more disturbing in graphic novel form

I once had a professor tell me that every modern film sprang from Fritz Lang’s M. Reading Jon J Muth’s startling re-imagining of Lang’s frightening masterpiece, I’m inclined to think he’s had the same effect on comics. Working from Lang’s original screenplay about a whistling child murderer stalking the streets of Berlin, Muth utilizes a raw, photo-realistic method of painting to bring the eerie story to vivid life on the page. The look evokes the grainy, choppy feel of early cinema, but there’s something surprisingly modern in Muth’s compositions.

Think about the shots the killer was shown in shadow or off screen until the second half. The cops being involved became a staple of many 80s horror movies.

The themes of justice, a society turned upside down, abuse of power are messages that are universally eternal.

The grainy look is a history lesson on how far film making has come and it was censor back in the day. I guess the Nazis didn't want their idea of perfect Germany interrupted.
