charming

Stanwyck is charming in this pre-code film. Her character has sophisticated ideas which nevertheless seem born of a genuine innocence. She's lovely in this early film.
I noticed her hair changed lengths between scenes.

I agree, she's lovely in this movie, and extremely pretty.
I think her hair changed lenghts because it was done in different ways, according to the occasions and the times of the day.

Stanwyck is so young and pretty, and stylish OMFG!

Movies like this are like a time capsule back to the 30's.

Time capsule most definitely! I love these old movies for the historical angle. It's interesting in so many ways.

It's evident that Depression-era audiences liked to watch the rich and celebrated getting up to misdeeds. People still do. Ministers railed against preCode movies for many reasons, and the glorification of selfishness was one of them. They did not want their congregations to think it was a lot more fun and a lot more profitable to throw morals out the window.

Some call this dated. I think preCode movies seem very modern. It's the Code movies that seem dated to me.

I also wouldn't call the ideas ahead of their time. The Roaring Twenties let the genie out of the bottle and it couldn't be forced back in even though society as a whole went through a conservative period after a liberal period. Ideas like independent women, birth control, the importance of romance, discussing intimate matters between a couple such as why having a baby to save the marriage is a bad risk, living together aka companionate marriage aka free thinking, divorce as an option for the unhappy rather than just for the brutalized, etc never went away (and indeed were to flourish during WWII). They are stronger than ever today.

Good post. She didn't have different lengths of hair in the film. She put it in a tight bun at the nape of her neck. Women permed their hair to make it look like finger waves, and some who didn't bob it put it in a lower bun at the neck.

Very charming and lovely indeed.

I noticed the hair length change too, but thought I was mistaken at first.

She is really stunning in this film and while the sound and quality of film were not that great (unusual for TCM) she still managed to stand out. A very simple film, some gorgeous sets, and she must have loved the wardrobe she got to wear. Stanwyck is easily one of my favorite actresses from the 30s and 40s.
