Plot: 76 years later and things haven't changed much

Gangster shootout kills baby in carriage, thugs fighting over turf - sounds like
L A in 2007. The more things change - the more they remain the same.
Karloff and Montgomery might have a future in the biz....

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'm watching it now -- I set my DVR to pick it up the other day.

I think it would have been funnier if the "society" people at Maria's little soiree had proved to be just as coarse under their thin veneers of propriety as Joe's drinking buddies from the sleazy speakeasy.

I guess I shouldn't try to comment on a movie until I've seen the whole thing. When I saw your post, however, I had to shove in my $.02.

I'm loving this movie, though. I mean, how can you beat the future "Jim Anderson" (Father Knows Best) and "Marcus Welby, MD" telling off an unwrapped "Imhotep" (the {original} Mummy). And the lovely Constance Cummings in the Juliet role gives the movie just the perfect air of picturesque sorrow.

On to finish watching it....

I can see how this movie may be loosely based on Romeo and Juliet; the star-crossed lovers from warring families bit but, cover your ears Shakespeare fans, I much prefer this movie.

I've never been a big fan of R&J and I especially dislike the way it ends. I like my love stories to have happy endings. In this movie the childhood sweethearts angle was a nice twist. I also liked the fact they made it to the alter; had her grandmother's support; both rejected their family's way of life long before they got together; and the help they got was straightforward in nature. In R&J, they got help but it was what ultimately led to tragedy.

This wasn't a big movie but I liked the story. There were a few drawbacks, like a high body count and the unknown fate of grandma, but overall it was pretty good.

Fast forward nine years... still nothing has changed or maybe I should say everything has. There have been more changes since eighty-five years ago and more that's remained the same too.

Today that baby in the carriage is at even higher risk. There are still the occasional shoot outs but, ironically, he may get killed by a drunk driver. Long after Prohibition ended it's possible more people die due to alcohol than they did in before that law was repealed.

That baby may also get run over by some dimwit using their cell phone to talk, use social media, take a selfie, pay a bill, etc. The baby could also have been shot by yet another random shooter with mental health issues or in support of some radical Muslim beliefs. There are terrorist attacks and, of course, with abortion being legal, it's possible that little baby was never born; killed by its very own mother.
