Tribute to Pat O'Brien in person

In the early 1980s, I think it was, a New York theater ran this film. I think it hadn't been shown, certainly not showcased, since it came out. To film lovers it was a big deal, and the rather modest sized auditorium was packed, with many film buffs in their 20s. At that time there were still over a half dozen revival houses in Manhattan and there was a great interest in movies of the 1930s. When house lights went back on we saw in the front row of the balcony Pat O'Brien Himself, larger than life, and stunning looking. For a split second I felt bad, figuring this generation wouldn't have been familiar enough with his films to revere him, and might just applaud politely, if that.

The sound was deafening, and went on for over a minute. What a great thing for a man who passed a few years later. How modestly he took the crowd's appreciation. When I think of current actor/celebrities I want to change the subject.
