Why do you like this movie?

After reading the novel, I've searched for good movies about it, and the 1931 one appeared as "the best".

I've just seen it. I'm shocked with the poor writing, the poor acting and the poor directing. Age is not an excuse. We have great movies by Murnau, Fritz Lang, Dreyer, Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Capra, Hitchcock etc at these times.

Why is this movie rated 8???

Probably because the monster is one of the most iconic figures in horror to this day

Most of the monster movies by universal are nothing like the source material. The best version of Frankenstine I've seen is Kenneth Branaghs version.

The show Penny Dreadful however has the absolute best interpretation of the monster I've ever seen. If you haven't watched the show I highly recommend it,

Ok, I'll bite.

Boris Karloff. Also, this film has had a huge historic impact on the horror genre.

Because of the spooky, Gothic atmosphere and the lovely scenery. Plus Boris Karloff's legendary performance and makeup.

I like because the characters are enjoyable, even if simple. The performances, as exaggerated as they are, are very fun to watch. It's part of why they're so iconic. Frankenstein's monster just looks menacing to me, where the rest rarely ever look all that threatening. I also really enjoy the settings and the cinematography in this film. That's probably more due to how movies were made back then, but it's very visually appealing to the eye.

"Poor directing"? Please.

I thought the movie was atmospheric, Boris Karloff's performance was legendary, Colin Clive's performance was classic, and of course Jack Pierce's make up. The scene where the monster is brought to life during a thunderstorm in the laboratory, and Dr. Frankenstein uttered his famous lines, "It's alive", "It's alive". That's horror history.

Great film, Universal Horror, Colin Clive is gorgeous & fantastic as the tortured dr Frankensten, Dwight Frye0awseome, Kreepy Karloff, mad scientist lab AND that wedding dress is divine!

Cool.

Please elaborate on why the writing, acting and directing was poor. To just say these were poor means nothing. I liked it because it gave me a sympathetic feeling for the monster and his creator, but mostly for the monster. For a movie that gives a sympathetic feeling for both the monster and his creator, I recommend 1992's Frankenstein tv movie.
