No Wonder Marian Marsh Never Went Far

.....in talkies. Her overacted histrionics were alright in silents, but definitely didn't transfer well to sound. I'm surprised the equipment in this movie didn't break with the way she continuously yelled and screamed her lines.

I was surprised by how good this movie was. I never heard of it before but I want to see it again sometime and give it my full attention.

???? Not aware that she had a silents career. No notable appearances before Svengali (1931) and this one, both of which were very much talkies. Please be aware of the time period, directors coached over-the-top emotion from their actors for a few years into the talking era. She's no Barbara Stanwyck for sure but given the primitive state of talkie acting in 1931 her performance here is just fine IMO. And those "journalists" deserved screaming at.

Her career actually went into eclipse because the Warner execs decided she was difficult, not because her character shrieked at Edward G. Robinson. This movie was a HIT.

Marian Marsh was terrific. She should have been a bigger star.
