VHS version better than DVD

I bought the Universal "Dracula" collection DVD way back when and found that the Spanish version as well as the Lugosi looked far better on my VHS editions. The DVD's had too much contrast... washing out fine details in black. Also, the subtitles on the Spanish VHS were nowhere near as obtrusive. Anyone encounter this anomaly? I have seen different versions of Dryers "Vampyr" that had the same results.

The VHS is shorter. I timed it.

The VHS version had a nicer rendition of "Swan Lake" under the titles, and bits of music to accompany Dracula rising from his coffin. However, I"m told that these were added for the home video release, and as so are unauthentic. The DVD went back to the original sound (or lack of) for these scenes.
