Was anyone as shocked as I about the ending? I didn't think that the execution would be carried out, and I was further shocked that it was filmed as it was. For 1931, even in that pre-code era, I thought that even if the execution were carried out, we would see the guns fire and then see the body lying on the ground. But to see the person shot to death as it was filmed brought images to my mind of Bonnie and Clyde (1967). The reaction of the executed was just too real, and very shocking to me. I just didn't expect it.

In fact it was probably more realistic than the later "dramatic" shootings seen in westerns, and hopefully without beingtoo vulgar, it was how an execution is supposed to be.... very quick and very fatal.
